The Middlebury College School in Russia

The C-V Starr-Middlebury College School in Russia provides international students the opportunity to study Russian language, history and culture in 3 different locales: Yaroslavl (recommended for intermediate students), Irkutsk, and Moscow. This program stresses the independence of its students, and promotes a fuller integration than that offered in many other American programs in Russia, which often segregate students from regular university and community life. The program content varies by city: In Irkutsk, students will take courses at the Middlebury center in Russian Language, Humanities and Politics, with an emphasis on regional Siberian Studies. Students may also study through the Irkutsk State University, which, alongside general liberal arts courses, offers a focus on local sciences dealing with its Lake Baikal, which contains nearly one-fifth of the world's fresh water. Students in Moscow will also primarily take courses at a Middlebury center, as well as through the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU). Advanced students may additionally choose to take a course at the Shukin Theater Institute or the Higher School of Economics. The host university in Yaroslavl is the Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University (YGPU), with the Middlebury program operating through the Department of International Relations. Students will be placed in homestays with host families. Breakfast and dinner will be provided on weekdays, with three meals per day on weekends. Rather than through the program, students pay their host families directly at the beginning of each month. Students wishing for the utmost in cultural integration and experience can organize internships through their program. Students must have at least two years of college-level Russian or the equivalent, as well as a 3.0 GPA or higher to qualify for this program.
