International Programs
Reed has a number of exchange programs for students interested in international off-campus study. Students who are interested in these programs are encouraged to meet with their faculty adviser and the off-campus program director to develop a study plan. In order to initiate this process, the International Programs Office has prepared example study plans for each major, which can be downloaded below. Faculty-approved programs are listed here. Students in good academic standing who are approved by Reed faculty for participation in these programs are able to use their financial aid and are registered as regular students at the College.

Independently Arranged Programs
In addition to the formal programs, Reed students are able to participate in a variety of other study programs sponsored either by a foreign university or an American college. Students are encouraged to discuss their study plans with their adviser, as well as the director of international programs, before they leave the College. Although students participating in such programs are required to take a leave of absence from the College and are not able to use financial aid, they can, with careful planning, be assured of having the work apply toward Reed academic requirements.

School for Field Studies

The School for Field Studies in Australia has a focus on Tropical Rainforest Studies. Although this is particularly suited to students interested in Biology and Environmental Studies, SFS programs offer ample resources and opportunities for students in all disciplines. The SFS center for Rainforest Studies is at the edge of the Atherton Tablelands, surrounded by World Heritage forests, farmland, and tropical hills. Students live in cabins within the rainforest. While Australia only has a small percentage of the world's rainforest, it serves as a model for environmental conservation practices. Students will look at various policies, using field research, collaboration with local landholders and environmental organizations, and a student directed project to explore possibilities for this area of the country. SFS gives Reed students an interdisciplinary approach to these topics, overlapping with questions about public policy, economic analysis of biological resource issues, and "Direct Research" projects where students carry out independent field work. For students of all disciplines, these programs are also an exceptional chance to explore field-based learning rooted in local communities and cultures. Co-sponsored by the Council on International Educational Exchange, Reed students with the equivalent of four semesters of college-level Spanish have the opportunity to study at several of the program's associated universities, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Pontificia Universidad Catolica, and the Universidad de Buenos Aires, all located in Argentina's capital city of Buenos Aires. Reed has developed affiliations with three Chinese Universities: Capital Normal University located in Beijing; East China Normal University located in Shanghai; and Fujian Normal University located in Fuzhou, where students can study the Chinese language intensively. Organization for Tropical Studies

Reed students can study abroad in Costa Rica with the Organization for Tropical Studies, an opportunity for intensive field work and exploration aimed at those with an interest in biology and environmental studies. This is a mobile program, where students will spend time at six different field sites, conducting field studies, working with local professors, scientists and ecologists. School for Field Studies

The School for Field Studies in Costa Rica focuses on land use practices and the Sustainable Development Studies. Although they are particularly suited to students interested in Biology and Environmental Studies, all SFS programs offer ample resources and opportunities for students in all disciplines. Students are engaged in the study of different development and resource management models that includes extensive fieldwork, research projects and trips around the greater area. Students on this program live in a dormitory in a small town near Atenas. SFS gives Reed students an interdisciplinary approach to these topics, overlapping with questions about public policy, economic analysis of biological resource issues, and “Direct Research” projects where students carry out independent field work. For students of all disciplines, these programs are also an exceptional chance to explore field-based learning rooted in local communities and cultures.
Cuba
- Sarah Lawrence College in Cuba

This unique opportunity is offered to Reed students in conjunction with Sarah Lawrence College's program based in Havana. Students take four courses, including Spanish, a core seminar, and electives. The seminar focuses on gender, health, education, and sustainable development throughout Cuban society. Students can take classes with Cuban students at the University of Havana, the Instituto Superior de Artes, or at the Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latino-Americano. This program is ideal for students interested in the Spanish language, humanities, social sciences, and the arts. Outside of the classroom, this program offers students opportunities to do fieldwork and internships at various organizations around the country. Furthermore, students can take advantage of various trips around the country to deepen their understanding of Cuban politics, history and social life. USFQ is a relatively new, private university founded in 1988 in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. It has much in common with Reed in its size (1200 students) and dedication to the intellectual development of its students. The curriculum offers courses in sciences, humanities and social sciences with courses of particular interest to Reed students in Latin American history and literature and environmental biology. This program is open to students with four semesters of college-level Spanish. In addition, the Universidad San Francisco de Quito has established the Galapagos Institute for the Art and Sciences (GAIAS), where students can take classes in environmental studies, marine biology and other related fields, taught in English. The University of Rennes II has one of the largest schools for foreign languages in France. Reed students are able to attend the university to improve their French or, for students with university-level French to take regular courses in the university. In cooperation with Sarah Lawrence College, Academic Programs Abroad, and the Center for University Programs Abroad, Reed students with at least two years of college level French language can take courses at some of France's most prestigious academic institutions including the Sorbonne (Paris IV), Jussieu (Paris VII), Ecole du Louvre, or Institut d'Etudes Politiques. The program provides immersion in the French university system, integrated with intensive tutorial work to provide students with personalized study programs. - Sciences Po-Lille

The program of Sciences Po in Lille offers a selective educational environment for all students interested in studying in Europe. There is no language requirement, but plenty of opportunities to learn French through language classes for all levels and integration with the local cultures. This program is located on the border between France and Belgium. It gives Reed participants small class settings to study wide ranging topics including Journalism, European Studies, International Relations, and the history and politics of European integration. Located in Baden Wurttemberg, the Universitat Tubingen exchanges students with Reed for a semester or academic year. Tubingen, founded in medieval times, is recognized for its humanities faculties, particularly philosophy. Two years of college-level German or the equivalent is required. Founded in 1948 and internationally recognized for both teaching and research, offers Reed students the opportunity to take regular university courses taught in German while participating in the vibrant cultural life of the reunited capital of Germany. Through College Year in Athens, Reed Students can get to know Greece, both ancient and modern. - Budapest Semester in Mathematics

Through this program, mathematics majors in their junior or senior years may spend a semester in Budapest and study under the tutelage of eminent Hungarian scholar-teachers who are members of the Eotvos University. Trinity College, the single constituent college of the University of Dublin, was founded in 1592 and is the oldest in Ireland and one of the oldest in Europe. Located in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, Trinity College prides itself on its tradition of personal contact between faculty and students encouraged by its collegiate atmosphere. Located in Ireland's second largest city, on the banks of the River Lee, University College Cork is the country's premiere research institute. Students are nominated by Reed to study at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. They may either enroll in regular courses in the university taught in Hebrew, or study in the Rothberg School for Overseas Students, where courses are taught in English in the areas of Middle East and Israeli studies and the Hebrew language. - Sarah Lawrence in Florence

This program in Florence is run through Sarah Lawrence. Classes are taught by Italian professors and are generally small, with ample opportunity for extracurricular tutorials and help. In addition to seminars of their choice, students take Italian language classes in accordance to their level, and have the option in the spring semester of enrolling in a class at the University of Florence. This program offers great opportunities for students interested in music, art history, Renaissance literature, or Italian culture in general. NYU in Florence offers an exceptional academic program for undergraduate students in subjects including Italian history, art, literature, philosophy, and architecture, along with the political, cultural, economic, and social issues that play a role in shaping Europe's future. Courses in business, film, photography, psychology, music (in spring semesters), and studio art are offered and will make use of the unique resources only available in Italy. Most content courses are taught in English, while some courses are offered in Italian to students proficient in the language. - School for Field Studies

The School for Field Studies in Kenya focuses on Wildlife Management Studies. Although they are particularly suited to students interested in Biology and Environmental Studies, all SFS programs offer ample resources and opportunities for students in all disciplines. SFS operates two locations for this program, one in southwestern Kenya near Amboseli National Park, and another in Tanzania near Lake Manyara National Park. Students will take an in depth look at issues of wildlife conservation, working to promote a symbiotic relationship between the management of wildlife dispersal areas, productive grazing lands, reliable water points, and safe homesteads. On this program, students live together in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. SFS gives Reed students an interdisciplinary approach to these topics, overlapping with questions about public policy, economic analysis of biological resource issues, and “Direct Research” projects where students carry out independent field-work. - ACTR Russian Language Program in Russia

Reed students, in cooperation with the American Council of Teachers of Russian, can spend a semester or year in one of a number of sites in Russia in intensive study of the Russian language. - National Theatre Institute/Moscow

This program is open to Reed theater students looking for a unique opportunity to study at the world famous Moscow Art Theatre School, the home of Stanislavsky and Anton Chekhov, located in the heart of Moscow. Russian language is not required. A full semester of credits in acting, Russian theatre history, movement and voice, design and Russian language are included in the program. This program offers study sites at universities in Irkutsk, Voronezh, and Yaroslavl where students focus on courses in Russian language, history and literature. - European University at St. Petersburg

The study abroad program at the European University at St. Petersburg is run through Vassar, and is well suited to Reed students who are interested in art history. Many of the courses focus on collections in the Hermitage Museum and the State Russian Museum, two world-class institutions. Students have direct access to the works of art as part of class work, and are required to take classes in Russian language, however no previous language skills are necessary. South Africa

Centered in Kruger National Park, the OTS program in South Africa provides students who have an active interest in biology with a rich experience in field study and research. Spain
- Hamilton College in Madrid

This program, run with Hamilton College, is open to students with a minimum of four semesters of college-level Spanish. Located in a residential quarter of Madrid, students take courses taught by members of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid or by other authorities in the fields of letters, history and the arts. - The Middlebury College School in Spain

The School in Spain offers valuable academic experiences in four Spanish cities: Getafe, Logroño, Madrid and Segovia. Getafe is a city in the province of Madrid and less than 30 minutes away by train. Students studying at the Universidad Carlos III in Getafe are able to experience campus life in a city of 100,000 while having easy access to the cultural offerings found in a capital city like Madrid. The Middlebury program at the Universidad de La Rioja, located in the wine-making province of La Rioja, offers students the opportunity to live and study in Logroño, a lovely provincial Spanish city of 110,000. The program at the Instituto Internacional in Madrid provides students a wealth of intellectual and cultural possibilities and enjoys a central location, making travel to various regions of the country convenient. Students studying at the Universidad Internacional SEK in Segovia, about one hour northwest of Madrid, can enjoy living in a city of 60,000, famous for its first century Roman aqueduct, impressive 16th century fort, and magnificent cathedral. - CIEE Barcelona and Seville

CIEE offers programs in both Barcelona and Seville for students with four semesters of Spanish. In Barcelona, students are invited to study at either the Universitat Pompeu Fabra or the Universitat de Barcelona. In Seville, students enroll at the Universidad de Sevilla. The academic program is supplemented with various field trips around the respective cities and around Spain. Students are paired up with a Spanish "big brother or sister" to help integrate them into daily life in Barcelona. In Seville and in Barcelona, students have an option to stay in a homestay or in a residencia. Both of these programs are good for students of all disciplines. Turks and Caicos
- School for Field Studies

The School for Field Studies in Turks and Caicos focuses on Marine Resource Management Studies. Although they are particularly suited to students interested in Biology and Environmental Studies, all SFS programs offer ample resources and opportunities for students in all disciplines. The SFS program in Turks and Caicos is located next to Cockburn Harbour, and has a field station and ocean laboratory right next to the water. Students live in two attached resident wings. Students work in the adjacent reefs and marine areas, monitoring the condition of the marine habitats. Individual projects can include work with fish population assessments, biodiversity surveys, and coral reef ecology. SFS gives Reed students an interdisciplinary approach to these topics, overlapping with questions about public policy, economic analysis of biological resource issues, and “Direct Research” projects where students carry out independent field work. The UEA, located in Norwich, England, shares a common educational theme with Reed College in its use of the conference style of instruction. Reed students may enroll in any of the various schools of the university -- including the schools of English and American studies and biology and chemistry -- which offer courses across those disciplines. At the University of Sussex Reed students can study in any of the 10 schools offering coursework in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. Sussex's excellent academic reputation, its emphasis on small group teaching and its location on the coast in Brighton within a short distance by train to London has brought students and scholars from 114 different countries. CMRS was founded in 1975 by Drs John and Sandy Fenely: first, to establish in Oxford a permanent institute for the interdisciplinary study of the medieval, Renaissance and early modern periods; second, to provide academic training for overseas students from all disciplines wishing to complete part of their education at Oxford but who are not matriculated members of the University.
