The inauguration of John R. Kroger as fifteenth president of Reed College took place on Friday, September 21, 2012. This video, featuring moments from throughout the evening, provides a glimpse of the events under the big top on the Great Lawn and beneath the lights shining merrily in the Quad. Roger Perlmutter ’73, chair of the board of trustees, invested Kroger with the trappings of office—including a copy of the Iliad and a bottle of spring water drawn from the Reed canyon.
New Orleans bluesman Davis Rogan ’90 played a set in the Quad after dinner; later in the evening, students massed in front of Eliot chanting "KRO-GER! KRO-GER!" before a dazzling display of fireworks.
Other events of the inaugural weekend included a Leadership Summit, which brought together aspiring alumni leaders for a series of meetings and presentations, a concert of four solos performed by student musicians in the Eliot Hall chapel, and a one-person Kara Walker exhibit, More & Less, in the Cooley Art Gallery.
