How do I use the scanner? I want to...

Scan an image to edit in Photoshop. (On this computer.)

Scan an image to print it out or save it to edit later.

Scan an image to send in an email. (Not for printing, presentations, or papers.)

Scan an image as a PDF.

Scan an image from a slide.

Scan an image from film (negatives).

I know what I’m doing. Just tell me what software is available.

On the Dock you’ll find EPSON Scan and Photoshop.

Scan an image to edit in Photoshop. (On this computer.)

  • Make sure the scanner is plugged into the computer you’re using
  • Place your document or photo face-down on the scanner window. Make sure the upper left front-side corner of the document or photo is against the rear right corner of the scanner, next to the arrow mark
  • Open Photoshop from the Dock
  • Click File >> Import >> EPSON Perfection V500
  • Choose "Professional Mode" from the top
  • For Image Type, select 24-bit Color for a color image or 16-bit Grayscale for a black and white image
  • If you intend to enlarge your image, set the Resolution to at least 600 dpi
  • Click Scan

Scan an image, then print it out or save it to edit later.

  • Make sure the scanner is plugged into the computer you’re using
  • Place your document or photo face-down on the scanner window. Make sure the upper left front-side corner of the document or photo is against the rear right corner of the scanner, next to the arrow mark
  • Open EPSON Scan from the Dock
  • Click Scan
  • Your photo scan will be saved to the desktop as image00#.jpg.
  • To print: Double-click the file to open it in Preview and send to the color printer (Please note that this is a basic color printer; for photo-quality printing, visit the Print Shop in Eliot 132)
  • To save: Emailing larger image files is not recommended. Get help with saving images to your home server or to a USB flash drive.

Follow these instructions to optimize image size for on screen display (monitor resolution is usually no more than 96 dpi) and save the recipient Inbox space:

  • Make sure the scanner is plugged into the computer you’re using
  • Place your document or photo face-down on the scanner window. Make sure the upper left front-side corner of the document or photo is against the rear right corner of the scanner, next to the arrow mark
  • Open EPSON Scan from the Dock
  • Choose "Home Mode" from the top
  • Set Image Type to Color and Destination to Screen/Web
  • Click Preview
  • After the image preview appears, click Scan
  • Your photo scan will be saved to the desktop as image00#.jpg; from here you can rename it before emailing it

Scan an image as a PDF.

  • Make sure the scanner is plugged into the computer you're using
  • Place your document face-down on the scanner window. Make sure the upper left front-side corner of the document is against the rear right corner of the scanner, next to the arrow mark
  • Open Adobe Acrobat Pro from the Dock
  • Click File >> Create PDF >> From Scanner
  • The Acrobat Scan dialogue box will open
  • Click Scan
  • The EPSON Scan dialog box will open
  • Under "Mode:" at the top right, choose Professional Mode
  • Under "Settings", next to "Name:" choose "Setting 1"
  • Click Scan

Scan from slides.

  • Ask at the circulation desk for the scanner adapter for film and slides.
  • Remove the white document mat on the scanner by gently sliding it up. Use the microfiber cloth to wipe the surfaces if necessary. 
  • Place the slide holder on the document table so that the tab labeled "C" fits into the "C" slot on the scanner.
  • Place up to four slides in the film holder with the shiny base side facing down.
    Your images should appear backwards on the side that faces up.
  • Use EPSON Scan (on the dock) in Full Auto Mode.
  • Please replace the document mat when done.

Scan from film (negatives).

  • Ask at the circulation desk for the scanner adapter for film and slides.
  • Remove the white document mat on the scanner by gently sliding it up. Use the microfiber cloth to wipe the surfaces if necessary.
  • Open the cover of the 35mm film strip holder.
  • Slide one or two film strips all the way into the film holder, shiny base side down. Images should appear backwards on the side that faces up.
  • Close the cover and press it down until you hear a click. Then press down on all the edges of the cover to secure it.
  • Place the film holder on the document table so that the tab labeled "A" on the film holder fits into the "A" on the scanner.
  • Use EPSON Scan (on the dock) in Full Auto Mode.
  • Please replace the document mat when done.
