Assistant Director, Disabilities Support Services

Reed College seeks an assistant director of Disabilities Support Services for a part-time (0.63 FTE), 9.5-month position during the academic year (mid-August through end of May). This is a Grade E-8 position with a posted full-time salary range of $53,287-$78,331. The starting salary for the part-time position is $33,571. The anticipated start date for this position will be mid –August, 2013.

The assistant director of Disabilities Support Services works closely with the director of Disability Services and with staff, students and faculty to facilitate student success in support of the academic mission of the college.  Primary responsibilities include: meeting with current and prospective students to discuss available support services and DSS accommodations and related processes at Reed; reviewing documentation to determine eligibility and identify appropriate accommodations; working with DSS director, faculty, and students to coordinate and implement accommodations; coordinating and supervising the note taking program for eligible students; maintaining records, documentation, informational materials, and detailed case notes; maintaining an updated understanding of current practices for disabilities services in higher education; providing academic coaching and one-on-one “skills and strategies” sessions with students; suggesting appropriate referrals for students with academic or other concerns; working with the director and broader support services to engage in ongoing program development. The assistant director in this department reports to the director of Disabilities Support Services. 

Qualified candidates will have current knowledge of the principles and practices of disabilities support services in higher education and will have demonstrated effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, faculty, and supervisors.  The successful applicant will also demonstrate experience with careful, confidential record keeping and strong attention to detail. They will have a record of successful collaboration with students, staff, and faculty and execution of actions and initiatives that demonstrate a professional commitment to issues relating to diversity. 

This is a detail-oriented position, requiring careful documentation and tracking of services. The assistant director will assist the director in tracking and implementing services and maintaining files in a professional manner.

Preferred candidates will have had direct experience working in higher education Disability Services offices and working with college-aged students with learning differences and executive function challenges. They will also have working knowledge of and/or experience in coordinating and implementing postsecondary DSS services such as:  note taking services; accommodated testing and proctoring; use of smart pens and other assistive technologies; and alternative text.  


A Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, disabilities services, student affairs, or a related field, and a minimum of two years experience in higher education support services are required.  Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree in a related field and at least three years of experience in higher education, and/or any combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.  The division of Student Services values diversity and encourages applications from underrepresented groups.
