Honor Principle

The Honor Council (HC) is a committee of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to promoting the Honor Principle in the Reed community. Members are organized into subcommittees around the goals of education, mediation, and advocacy for community rights.

The Honor Council’s Education Subcommittee consists of nine student members, one staff member, and a faculty chair.  Its mission is to raise awareness of the Honor Principle and to educate the community regarding the honor process. The Education Subcommittee plans events to bring Reed students, faculty, and staff together for discussion of specific honor issues, including, for example, graffiti on campus, honor issues in the dorms, academic dishonesty, and the interaction of policy and the honor principle. The Education Subcommittee engages these issues through daily office hours, Honor Day, informal discussions in the dorms, articles in the Quest, and work during orientation and with Residence Life. The student Honor Council office is located in the basement of Gray Campus Center (GCC 033A), next to the Quest office. Office hours are from 5 to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Consultations are confidential.

The Mediation Subcommittee is the arm of the Honor Council that facilitates formal and informal mediation, and it also organizes mediator training.  Informal mediation is the first step of conflict resolution; this option is appropriate for parties able to discuss their issues without the assistance of a mediator. The members of the Mediation Subcommittee can answer any general questions that relate to informal mediation. Formal mediation is a confidential, non-binding process moderated by a mutually agreeable mediator. Because each mediation is unique, the circumstances of a mediation and its oral or written resolution are flexible in order to accommodate the concerns of all parties. To contact the Mediation Subcommittee, email hc-mediation@reed.edu.

The Community Rights Subcommittee (CRS) is composed of two faculty members, two staff members, two students, and a student chair. The CRS advocates for the Reed community in honor-related issues. Members of the community may contact the CRS regarding honor violations that affect or target that community as a whole. The CRS will pursue these issues through informal mediation, formal mediation, or honor case to resolve the alleged honor violation. To contact the CRS, please email the student chair of CRS.

To contact the Honor Council, stop by our regular office hours on the lower level of the Gray Campus Center (GCC 033A) or e-mail hc-students@lists.reed.edu. Office hours are from 5 to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. HC liaisons have been established for each dorm and the college apartments. They serve as an additional outlet for questions and concerns regarding Honor Principle issues and mediation. Consultations are kept confidential.
