Class of 2010 Scholarship
Mission Statement
In recognition of the value of a Reed education, the Class of 2010 Scholarship will provide support to an entering student with financial need by harnessing the power of many to make a difference for one.
Message from the Scholarship Committee
Dear Class of 2010 (and other interested students):
In the response to the New York Times article which exposed the growing demand for financial aid at Reed, President Diver wrote that, “Ideally, the ability to pay should never enter into a decision of whether to admit a particular student.” We couldn’t agree more and we recognize the need to remove the burden from financially needy students. No prospective Reedie should be denied admission because of an inability to pay tuition.
As we focus on graduation this May, we might forget what first drew us to Reed. Whether it was a masochistic curiosity about the rigorous academics, the tall tales of the illustrious Doyle Owl, or the draw of the Canyon, we’ve all experienced the highs and lows of Reed. We’re excited to pass the torch to a new class.
With this in mind, we created the Class of 2010 Scholarship, funded entirely by students—primarily members of the senior class—for an incoming student with financial need. This is a student-led effort, with the goal of making Reed a little more accessible to a prospective student. Now is the time for our class to join together and help a future Reedie. Please, give [what you can] and know that you are contributing to the long-term health of Reed.
To help us in this task, President Diver is working with us to make every donation go further. Colin will personally match all gifts of $15 or more from current students, up to a total matching grant of $3,000. Additionally, Colin will give a lump-sum bonus of $2,000 if 200 students give gifts of any amount. This means a $15 gift qualifies for BOTH matches. A $10 gift only qualifies towards the lump sum bonus match.
Please join your fellow Reedies—and fellow thesis-ers!—and Colin to ease the financial strain on future students and to retain the academic integrity of Reed.
Thank you,
The Class of 2010 Scholarship Committee

FAQ
Why would I give money to Reed?
You’re giving money to Reed for the benefit of an individual student next fall. Reed relies on private support to pay for financial aid. Even as students, we can come together to help a Reedie out.
Who else gives to Reed?
Alumni, parents, trustees, local Portlanders, foundations, faculty, and staff give to Reed each year.
How much should I give?
You should give an amount that is meaningful and comfortable to you. Many students are giving in the $15-$50 range. You also have the option of breaking your gift into installments over several months.
I’m not a senior. Can I still give?
Yes. All students may give to the Class of 2010 Scholarship and all student gifts are eligible for the match from Colin.
Who will receive the Class of 2010 Scholarship?
The financial aid office will determine who the recipient will be from among the incoming class. The scholarship will be awarded on entirely need-based criteria.
Will the student know where their scholarship came from?
Yes. Their award letter will say “Class of 2010 Scholarship.” They will know it was funded by outgoing seniors and fellow students.
How much will the scholarship be?
That’s up to you, and the rest of the senior class, to determine through your giving. If 200 students make gifts of $15 for a total of $3,000, both matches from Colin will apply in full, for a total scholarship of $8,000. We will keep you updated on the total, both during the semester and over the summer.
Where does Colin’s matching money come from?
His checkbook. This is Colin’s personal gift, not a budget item.
What percentage of the money will go to the scholarship?
100%. The contributed funds will sit in an account and the full amount will be transferred to the financial aid office over the summer.
How do I give?
Click here. Or stop by Eliot 129. Or find one of the committee members: Ida Peric ’10, Gina Vorderstrasse ’10, Emily Corso ’10, or Michael Stapleton ’10.
Can I just ask my parents to give instead?
Sure. But it won’t count for the matching funds from Colin. Why not make a gift of your own?
Has this been done before?
In short, no. This will be the first time Reed students have come together to fund a scholarship. In the past, alumni have done this, such as through the Class of ’83 Well-endowed Scholarship. Help us make history!
