Giving to Reed
Young Alumni Challenge
Spring Bonus
This past fall, record numbers of alumni from class years 2000-2009 made Annual Fund gifts to Reed, securing the $50,000 challenge grant from Linda Hammill Matthews '67 and far exceeding the original goal of 350 donors. Since then, young alumni have continued to give.
Impressed with the outpouring of generosity from young alumni, Linda has agreed to make an additional $50,000 gift to Reed in honor of the young alumni class with the most donors by June 30. As of March 15th, the class-by-class breakdown is:

Why is Linda extending this challenge?
Linda hopes to inspire alumni from the past ten years to become invested in Reed’s success. She recently wrote:
“I agreed to sponsor this challenge for young alumni because it is so important to me, and to the college, that the newest generation of Reedies begins active and engaged philanthropic support of Reed.We earlier generations won’t be around forever, so we are doubly thankful that newer alumni like you are willing to take on the important role of investors and stewards of the college.”
Why do alumni give to the Annual Fund?
Everyone gives for different reasons. Here are just a few:
I've wanted to support Reed financially every year since I left, but was always too poor to even consider it. Today is the first payday of my new exciting job, and it's a great pleasure to have the chance to give a little back—even if it's not very much right now.

I love Reed College! I would travel to the moon and back just to see her smile!

There are so many reasons I give to Reed: the incredible love of learning it inspired and nourished, the desire to make sure future generations can share the same wonderful, weird, difficult, and all-around phenomenal experience I did, and because you guys keep calling to ask, and I'm easily talked into things.

I loved my two years at Reed (I transferred in as a junior) and wish I could have had four. The quality of the education I received was outstanding, and I believe only a few schools in the country offer a comparable experience. Moreover, the financial aid I received was incredibly generous. Reed would never, ever have been possible for me without a substantial amount of help, and I hope it will continue to be able to offer that to other students. Eventually I would love for Reed to be 100% need-blind, but I'll never restrict my gifts because I understand that there's no point going need-blind if the quality of Reed's education must be compromised to do so. And yes, I'll donate larger gifts if my income ever goes up, of course. Meanwhile I'm just trying to keep those alumni giving numbers up.
