Giving to Reed

What is phonathon?

During phonathon, current Reed students call Reed alumni and parents to:
  • offer first-hand news of the college
  • provide an opportunity to support Reed with a gift to the Annual Fund
  • discuss campus events
  • answer questions
  • update email and postal mail addresses
Phonathon is staffed by current Reed students. About 25 to 30 students make calls during phonathon, which occurs two to three times per year—in fall, winter, and sometimes spring. During the 2007 fiscal year, callers made over 60,000 calls and raised over $470,000 for the Annual Fund.

Annual Fund supporters believe in Reed and in the power of giving back to the college. While tuition covers 72 percent of the cost of a Reed education, the rest is supplied by Annual Fund donors, the endowment, corporations, and foundations.

For current students: do you want to be a phonathon caller?

One of the top benefits of working in Reed’s phonathon is the connection that callers make with alumni. Callers often find themselves talking to people from their hometowns or states, or even to people who shared the same major or faculty adviser. The ties between Olde and New Reed are what keep many callers coming back to phonathon year after year.

Phonathon offers flexible hours and evening and weekend shifts. Callers receive a competitive salary, are eligible for performance raises and goal-based incentives, and are provided with snacks during each shift and a meal on extended weekend shifts. Great callers share a love of Reed and a desire to help alumni and parents connect with the college. Successful callers are well-informed about campus events and eager to talk about everything from Hum 110 to the latest Doyle Owl sighting.
