Lecture & Recital: Oleg Timofeyev, "The Golden Age of Russian Guitar"

Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Eliot Hall chapel

Russian guitarist, musicologist, and filmmaker Oleg Timofeyev will bring his rarely-heard repertoire to Reed College. His lecture-recital will present an illustrated history of the traditional Russian seven-string guitar that originated in the 18th century during the reign of Catherine the Great. Oleg Timofeyev will perform compositions by I. von Held, A. Svientitsky, A. Sychra, and other outstanding Russian musicians. Before his arrival in the United States, Timofeyev studied guitar with Kamill Frautschi. In the US, he studied with Patrick O'Brien, Hopkinson Smith, and James Tyler. He holds a PhD in performing practice from Duke University (1999). In the early 2000s, Timofeyev rediscovered and recorded the music of Matvei Pavlov-Azancheev (1888–1963), a composer who spent 10 years in Stalin's labor camps. Since 2006, Timofeyev has been organizing annual festivals IARGUS, solely dedicated to the Russian seven-string guitar, has performed and taught widely in Europe and the United States, and is a recipient of numerous scholarly awards.
