Black History Month Event: Intisar Abioto, The Black Portlanders Project art gallery opening reception

Tuesday, 4:00 p.m., Vollum lounge

Intisar Abioto is a local explorer, writer, dancer, photographer, and multidisciplinary artist who started The Black Portlanders project, a photographic journey illuminating Black Portlanders and their stories. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, she moved to Portland in 2010 with her family of women creatives. Her work as an artist is told through an active, creative exploration of life through arts, storytelling, and adventure. Her unique form of story inquiry as a way of life has taken her from Memphis to Morocco to Berlin and beyond, seeking authentic stories of and from people within the African Diaspora.

Her first foray into the world of media exploration and travel began in 2007, when she, along with her four artist sisters, co-created The People Could Fly Project. A 200,000-mile international arts expedition based around Virginia Hamilton’s award-winning children's book, The People Could Fly, the PCF Project was centered in dreams, visions, and the tangible reality of the mythic flying African.

In 2013, she began work on The Black Portlanders(.com), an ongoing photo essay and exploratory blog imaging people of diverse African descent in Portland, Oregon. Her recent work can also be found in the Urban League of Portland's State of Black Oregon 2015 and her recently published zine, Black Portlands (Travel Portland). Intisar swears by the true love that can be found in fantasy, folklore, language, and movement. She makes her home in Portland, Oregon and her adventure… everywhere.

Intisar Abioto will be showcasing some of the photos from The Black Portlanders project, featuring some of our Reed community members! She will give her opening remarks at the opening reception on Tuesday, February 16, at 4 p.m. in Vollum Lounge. Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be provided. The art collection will remain on display in Vollum Lounge through February 26.

Sponsored by the Office for Institutional Diversity, Committee on Diversity, and the Office for Inclusive Community. For more information on Reed's Black History Month events, visit our website.
