Exploration of Infra-red Capture Technology for Use in Classrooms, Labs, and Performance Auditoriums

Jim Holmes, Audio/Visual Technician

Funds were used to purchase a Xantech infra-red capture system. This system allows the user to capture infra-red codes from remote control devices and duplicate them in a consolidated fashion. The test unit was hooked up to a Sharp XG-P10XU data projector and a Panasonic VCR. Codes from the various control features were fed into the system. The controls were then duplicated by the capture module and replicated for control by the transmitter. Capture was somewhat difficult depending on the angle of incidence between controller and receiver. The results were perfect as expected. These systems will eventually replace remote controls in classrooms around campus consolidating all control to a dual gang wall panel. Implementation will begin next budget cycle, (2003-04), with the focus being on improving existing classroom technology.
