Manual Proxy Configuration
for the Remote Access Proxy server

Note: If your browser of choice is Firefox, we recommend that you use the Automatic Proxy Configuration instructions.

Manual Proxy Configuration

These instructions for using Reed's proxy server are geared towards a wide audience. Whatever browser and OS you're using, these general instructions will work for you.

  1. Open up your Browser.
  2. Open the Preferences/Options window.
  3. Find the option relating to "Proxies". Search for words like "Manual proxy configuration".
  4. In the field for HTTP Proxy type in: proxy.reed.edu
The Port number field should be set to: 80
  5. Save the changes you just made, and exit.

You will be sent to a Reed authentication page when you try to access resources. Use your network username and password to login, and you're off!

When you're through browsing the resources, you must go back into your browser's preferences to undo the proxy settings. If you forget, your web browsing experience will be slower than usual, as all your traffic will be routed through Reed's proxy. This will also bog down the proxy server, making everyone's proxy experience a little slower.

  6. When you're done it should look like the below. Save your changes and exit the browser.
