Printing in Mac OS 10.1
You can set up your computer to print to as many printers as you want. Simply follow these instructions for each printer. You only need to set up each printer once.
Remember, color printing is different. You must still set up your computer to print to the printer using the instructions below. Then, simply print to the color printer, then okay the print job by going to http://printing.reed.edu.

Setting up a printer
To set up a printer you need to know: the name of the printer (you may need to ask the person who maintains the printer for the printer name), the model/make of the printer (look on the printer itself), and the zone the printer lives in. If you need to get information on a printer, visit our Printer Model Reference.
OS 10.1 comes with printer drivers for many printers. Unfortunately, it does not come with the printer drivers for the newest Hewlett-Packards (HPs) on campus. If you follow the instructions below for "Installing HP black and white printer drivers" you will be able to print to the newer black and white HP printers on campus, including the IRC printers.
back to topInstalling HP black and white printer drivers
- Connect to the Tool Chest.
- Double-click on Utilities, then Printing/Font, then HP LaserJet Mac OS 8-10.
- Drag the hp LaserJet Installer to your desktop.
- Disconnect from the Tool Chest
- Double-click on the hp LaserJet Installer.
- In the dialog box that opens, type the administrator name and password for your personal computer.
- Click Continue.
- Make sure Easy Install is selected, click Install, then click OK. Be patient. In a few minutes the installer should report that installation was successful.
- Click Quit.
You are now ready to set up your computer to print to any networked black and white printer. Proceed to "Selecting a printer".
If you want to print to a color printer on campus you may need to get the installer for the color printer’s driver from the Tool Chest. We also put other commonly used drivers for Mac OS 10 on the Tool Chest. Look in the Tool Chest-> Utilities-> Printing/Font-> Mac OS 10 printer drivers folder. These installers should behave much like the one we have documented. If you don’t find what you are looking for, contact CUS.

- Double-click on the hard drive icon on your desktop.
- Double-click on the Applications (not " Applications (Mac OS 9)") folder, then double-click on the Utilities folder.
- Double-click on Print Center.
- In the Printer List window that opens, click Add. Be patient. In a few moments new information should appear in the Printer List window.
- From the pop-up menu at the top of the window, select AppleTalk. From the lower pop-up menu, select AppleTalk Network.
- Under Name, double-click on the appropriate zone.
- Select the printer you want to add, then click Add. In a few moments the printer should show up in Print Center.
- Close Print Center.
You have successfully set up the printer. You should be able to print to it from both native OS 10.1 applications and Classic applications.
Versions of OS 10 prior to 10.1 do not set up printing under Classic automatically, nor are they always able to auto select printers. If you are trying to set up a printer under an earlier version of 10 and running into problems, contact CUS.
back to topPrinting via the Print Server
Note: Students are always allowed to print to billed printers in the IRCs, the library, and other public labs. You may only print to an unbilled printer like a faculty printer if you have permission from the person who pays for the supplies for that printer. This person is almost always the faculty secretary nearest to the printer.- Click on the Go menu in the Finder, and click Connect to Server.
- Click on Academic Servers, select Print Server, and click Connect.
- For Name type your network username. For Password type your network password, then click Connect.
The Print Server will now mount on the desktop. You can print to any Reed printer as long as you are connected. To disconnect, drag the Print Server icon to the trash. Remember to reconnect to the Print Server each time you restart your computer and want to print.
back to topPrinting double-sided in Mac OS 10.1
All of the IRC printers can print double-sided. If you have set up IRC Spooler, you can print double-sided from native OS 10.1 applications by following these steps.
- From the File menu of the application from which you are printing, select Print....
- In the print dialog, click on the pop-up menu showing Copies & Pages, then select Duplex.
-
- Check Print on Both Sides, then click Print.
