Finding E-mail Addresses
If you set up an LDAP server correctly during the setup process for Mail, then when you begin typing in an address in the To: field, Mail should automatically search for matching addresses and offer a list of suggestions.
Personal Address Books
OS X comes with an application called Address Book which is intended to be integrated with various other OS X applications. Mail does not have its own address book, but instead borrows the names from this application.
Creating Your Address Book
- You can import a pre-existing address book by using File > Import in Address Book.
- Alternatively, you can add individual contact cards. To do this, go to the File menu and select New Card.
- On the right side of the Address Book window, you can fill in various information fields. The information is saved as you type.
Using Your Address Book
- Compose a new message in Mail
- Select the Address button.
- A window will appear with your addresses. Double-click on a name to add that person as a recipient.
Mailing Lists
Address Book allows you to create a group for sending email to a bunch of people (also known as mailing lists).
- In Address Book, choose View > Card and Columns.
- Choose File > New Group and enter a name for the new group in the Group column. You can also click the Add (+) button at the bottom of the Group column.
- To add a person to the group, drag the person's name from the Name column to the group name.
- To remove a person, select the person's name and choose Edit > Remove From Group. You can choose to remove the person from the group or remove the person from Address Book.
