Gmail Setup Instructions

Once you've switched your Reed email to Gmail, here's how to add the account to your favorite mail client.

Apple Mail

Mountain Lion (10.8)

  1. You'll first need to reset your Reed Kerberos password at our secure Account Tools website.  It might seem like a pain, but it's a necessary step in order for your mail client to be able to communicate with Google's servers.  We're not kidding, you actually do have to do this. Note: this step is only necessary once (you don't have to repeat it for each mail client that you setup).
  2. In Apple Mail, Go to the File menu > Add Account.
  3. Enter your name, Reed email address and password.
  4. Click Create.
  5. Enter the following for the Incoming Mail Server and then Click Continue.
    Account Type: IMAP
    Description: Reed Gmail
    Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
    User Name: username@reed.edu
  6. Enter the following for the Outgoing Mail Server and then click Continue.
    Description: Reed Gmail
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Check the box that says Use Authentication
  7. Click Create.
  8. Depending on how much email you have, it may take several hours or longer for it to be migrated to Gmail. New emails you receive will appear automatically in your Inbox.
  9. When migration is complete, you can delete your old IMAP account. Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts tab > select your IMAP account (will probably be the account at the top; if unsure, make sure Incoming Mail Server is imap.reed.edu). Click the "-" button on the lower left.
NOTE: Don't forget that you may need to configure additional settings, like your signature, message composition (html vs plain text), positioning of reply text (before or after the message being replied to), and the like.
