E-Mail Clients

The IMAP System

Reed's IMAP e-mail system conforms to an Internet standard, so there are many different programs (referred to as clients) that you can use to send and receive messages. E-mail needs vary from person to person, thus there is no single client that we can recommend above all others. We do however, provide support for two of the more popular e-mail clients available; Thunderbird, and Apple Mail (both 10.8 and 10.7). We also provide documentation and support for the Webmail interface. If you are trying to set up an unsupported client which is compatible with IMAP, we provide necessary configuration settings that you can use to set up your client.

Mozilla Thunderbird

We strongly recommend Mozilla Thunderbird due to its features, user-friendliness, and flexibility. It also provides consistent functionality across Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux, which translates to an application that has extensive documentation.

Apple Mail

Set Up Apple Mail | Using Apple Mail

This client is available only for Apple machines running OS X (version 10.x). Because Apple Mail is tightly integrated to OS X, a version of Apple Mail can be upgraded only when the operating system is upgraded. Apple mail should come pre-installed with every new Macintosh computer. It has a comprehensive set of features and is easy to use.

Webmail

Using Webmail | Access Webmail Now

As the name implies, Webmail is accessed through a web browser over the Internet. It can be used on any computer (Mac, Windows, or Linux), and is simple and reliable. Webmail may be accessed while travelling, or when you do not have access to your own computer with Thunderbird or Apple Mail installed. No installation is required; all Webmail needs is a web browser and an internet connection.

Occasional Use of Webmail

You can use Webmail part of the time and Thunderbird or Apple Mail the rest of the time. For example, faculty or staff may use Webmail at home or on the road, and Thunderbird or Apple Mail in the office. If you decide to do so, there are two things you should be aware of:

  1. If you move e-mail messages off the server (to "Local Folders" in Thunderbird or "On My Mac" in Apple Mail), those messages will no longer be accessible via Webmail.
  2. Each client uses its own address book. Adding or changing addresses will need to be done separately in each address book you use, however, you will be able to look up Reed e-mail addresses in any client with LDAP properly configured.
