Making a .bib file with Bookends

Bookends is available on all Macs in the IRCs. If you would like a copy for your own machine, talk to CUS.

Importing a Preexisting Bibliography into Bookends

  1. If you have a .bib file already, you can open it directly in Bookends by right-clicking (or control-clicking) on the .bib file's icon and going to Open With... and choosing Bookends. If not, export your existing bibiliography in tab-delimited or ideally, BibTeX format.
  2. Go to File --> New Database.
  3. With a new database window open, go to File --> Import References.
  4. In the window that appears, there is a list underneath the words "import references from:" From this list, choose BibTeX or Bookends Tab-Delimited File as appropriate. Click OK.
  5. When you are ready to export your bibliography as a .bib file, click the checkboxes next to the sources you want to export. (Hint: on the Mac, shift-clicking on one checkbox checks all of them.)
  6. Now go to Biblio --> Bibliography Formatter. You want to output in the format of BibTeX (instead of APA) as BibTeX (as opposed to styled text, plain text or HTML). Send the bibliography to Disk, click OK and save the file to the same folder as your LaTeX document.

  7. Go to the next step: how to use your bibliography with your LaTeX document.

Making a New Bibliography in Bookends

  1. Make a new bibliography database by going to File --> New Database.
  2. You may need to enable BibTeX in the following places:
    • Bookends --> Preferences --> BibTeX (Click Enable BibTeX. You may find it useful to change "if key field is not unique" to Append Lowercase Letter or Warn.)
    • Biblio --> Default Format (Select BibTeX so that there is a check mark by the format.)
  3. Add a new reference by clicking on the plus sign button on the bottom bar of your new database window. This is the plus sign you want to choose (there are two). Of the two plus signs, chose the one that matches the picture.
  4. Fill in the appropriate fields. Be sure to check out these tips if you haven't already to make sure that your entries will be properly understood and formatted. For help picking a citation format (article, book, chapter in a book), see our section on manual bibliographies.

  5. Repeat as necessary for all the sources you want to include. Closing the source's window will not delete the source from your bibliography; to do that you have to click on the gear button again and go to Delete.
  6. When you are ready to export your bibliography as a .bib file, click the checkboxes next to the sources you want to export. (Hint: on the Mac, shift-clicking on one checkbox checks all of them.)
