Reed College Catalog
The academic program of the Division of the Arts encourages scholarship, creativity, and performance. Studio courses and opportunities for performance and production provide intensive experience in the study and practice of the various artistic disciplines. Major programs are available in art, music, dance–theatre, and theatre.
A major in any department of the division must satisfy these requirements:
- Humanities 210, 220, or 230. This may be used to satisfy either the Group A or Group B requirement; however, taking any two of Humanities 210, 220, or 230 will not satisfy more than one distribution (Group A, B, or X) requirement.
- Satisfactory completion of two units of a second-year college foreign language course. Waiver of the division foreign language requirement will be granted in cases where the student has demonstrated proficiency equivalent to two years of college-level study. Two units of foreign language may be used toward satisfying the Group D requirement. Proficiency cannot be used to satisfy Group D.
- Approval of all independent study (481) courses by the division. The opportunity for independent study is ordinarily offered only to upper-class students who have done extensive work in the area.
