Working Weekend

How do radio journalists choose their subject matter? How do they go after their stories? What are the necessary skills for interviewing, editing, and producing the story? Twenty-four students applied, ten were accepted, and together with Robert Smith, they learned those skills and more in a two day intensive during this year's Working Weekend's Radio Bootcamp.
The rough schedule for Radio Bootcamp follows. Participants were required to attend all sessions:
Friday, February 1 8:00 p.m.—10 p.m.
Initial meeting to talk about story.
Saturday, February 2 9 a.m.—5 p.m.
Recording techniques; how to ask questions. Off to campus to collect sound. Back to choose sound, edit, write, voice.
Sunday, February 3 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Play the pieces, final Q&A.
Required for the experience:
- Save your resume as such: first & last name_RadioBootcamp (for example, BHunter_RadioBootcamp.pdf)
- Answer the following questions: Why do you want to join?
- What writing, journalism, acting, story background do you have?
- And what would you like to tell stories about?
- Save your resume as a PDF, do not send a .doc) and completed application to Erika Van Winkle no later than Friday, January 18, 12 p.m. noon.
- Required materials:
- Laptop.
- Headphones or ear-buds.
- Smartphone for audio recording. (If you don't have a smartphone, please let us know in advance so that we can get you a recorder to use).
- You will need to download a free editing program before you arrive (we will send you details if you are chosen).
