I'm excited to be interning as a summer organizer in UNITE HERE's 2013 Organizing Beyond Barriers program. Additionally, I will be actively involved in negotiating a new contract with the unionized workers of the Oregon Convention Center. I am very grateful and excited to be a part of this program and its amazing work for social justice. Not many people take that approach to arts research. I submitted a thesis proposal on theatre funding for my qual, so this internship should help me turn that proposal into my thesis.
59. Sophie Naranjo-Rivera - Sociology
After receiving a President's Summer Fellowship award, I plan to carry out my plans to travel to Cuba using my legal tavelling capabilities. I will be visiting my Cuban family for the very first time in my life, and interviewing Cuban nationals who lived through the revolution about their thoughts and experiences. I also plan to interview younger Cuban nationals about their lived experience now, before big political changes take place in upcoming years.
