8% of Reed students were valedictorians of their senior class and more than half of the students graduated in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class.
Reed ranks third in the nation among institutions of higher learning in the production of future Ph.D.s in all disciplines. It ranks first in biological sciences, second in chemistry and the humanities, and third in history, foreign languages, and political science. Don't be surprised if a Reed student does not know his/her GPA
Since its founding, Reed College has adhered to a distinctive educational philosophy, a critical component of which is the evaluation and grading of student academic work. Course grades are filed with the registrar, but by tradition students are encouraged not to focus on grades. Students do not receive standard report cards. Papers and exams are generally returned to students with lengthy comments but without grades affixed. There is no dean's list or honor roll and students DO NOT graduate cum laude.
No grade inflation at Reed College
Reed appears to be unique in having experienced virtually no grade inflation. The average GPA in 2007-08 was 3.1 (on a 4.0 scale). This figure has scarcely changed for the past 18 years. During that period, only five students have graduated from Reed with perfect 4.0 grade averages. More information on grading policies at Reed.
