Calling all Sophomores! Join us for the inaugural edition of Sophomore Stretch. Now's the time to start (or continue!) thinking strategically about building your summers. What sorts of explorations will help you decide the directions of your life when you graduate? What kinds of internships, jobs, and other experiences are on your bucket list during Reed? Hear from a panel of students who have had successes in building their resumes by smart accessing of resources!
We look forward to welcoming you.
Moderator- Lillian Karabaic, '13, Economics
Lillian came to Reed as a slightly-older-than-average
student after serving two years in Americorps and 5 years in the
non-profit sector. Since she's been at Reed, she's been able to harness
Reed's resources in the form of a McGill Lawrence Award for a summer
working in India, a Ducey Award to fund an internship with Willamette
Pedestrian Coalition working on policy for liveable communities, and
multiple Simpson/Opportunity grants to fund attendance at national and
international conferences. This year she became the first ever Reedie to
win the highly selective Udall scholarship for environmental
leadership. She's doing her thesis on the effect of bicycle
infrastructure on rental values in Portland. After graduation, she plans
to bicycle through Europe and Asia researching transit and bicycle
policy before returning to work in active transportation policy.
Katrina Bastian '15, English
Katrina came to Reed after earning an IB Diploma from UWC
in Duino, Italy. Directly before going to UWC, Katrina spent the summer
volunteering in India at an orphanage, which was her first experience
teaching children. After completing her IB, she spent a year working on
the organic farm, Los Pablanos, in New Mexico. Katrina came to Reed as a
first year student last year and became heavily involved in the dance
program. This summer, she completed an internship with Girls, Inc., an
organization she learned about last summer when a customer at a
restaurant where she worked had on a Girls Inc t-shirt and she inquired
about the program.
Michael Kincaid '13, Math/Econ
Before matriculating to
Reed, Michael worked in a progression of tech ops roles at a Silicon Valley
startup. Michael returned to college with the hope of finding out how the Reed
liberal arts experience might open doors to new career possibilities. Michael
has held summer internships as an analyst with Analysis Group, a Boston-based economic
consulting firm, and as a research assistant for Reed economics professor, Noelwah
Netusil. Michael also works at Reed's computing services and interned in
operations at Puppet Labs during his junior year. Michael hopes to offer some
ideas for how students with broad interests can use outside opportunities to
help solidify their post-Reed plans.
Ha Nguyen '15, Biochemistry
Ha grew up in Hanoi, Vietnam and went to a high school in
Maine before coming to Reed. With her eye to a medical career, she's
planning to study biochemistry with a focus on the pre-med track. She's
also interested in studying Spanish and looking forward to studying
abroad for a semester next fall. Ha won a summer internship award last summer to work for the VA Hospital. She used her networking skills to identify the internship.
Cole Perkinson '13, Chemistry-Physics
Cole has explored a wide range of summer research
experiences. During the summer after his freshman year, he studied
underwater volcanoes with a trace element chemist at NOAA as an intern
with the Joint Institute for the Study of Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO).
To build on his physics and inorganic chemistry courses the following
year, he researched the multiphoton dissociation of chromium
hexacarbonyls using a Class IV ND:YAG laser in Dan Gerritty's lab at
Reed. He was awarded a Goldwater Scholarship and a NOAA Hollings
Scholarship in the spring of 2011, which helped to send him to MIT this
summer to design and construct underwater robots with MIT Sea Grant.
For his thesis, Cole would like to expand on the work of
chemistry-physics student Neal Reynolds '12 to synthesize colloidal
doped quantum dots and analyze their spectroelectrochemical properties.
Following graduation, Cole is hoping to study materials science at
Cambridge before attending graduate school in applied physics. During
his free time, Cole enjoys playing piano and Zimbabwean marimba,
backpacking, making sushi, juggling, and inventing board games.
Danny Sellers '13, Political Science
This summer, Danny worked with an NGO in Mombasa,
Kenya, doing community development work, while living with a
local family. He's interested in sustainable development, and
hopes to continue doing community-focused development work
wherever the opportunity arises. He also has experience doing
absolutely nothing during the summer, as after his freshman
year, when he applied for many internships and heard back from
none, before doing a brief stint of volunteer work.
