Vision: Getting Americans to Take Charge of Their Health
Mission: Making America’s Students & Citizens Agents of Change
HealthCorps (www.healthcorps.org), a proactive health movement founded by heart surgeon
Dr. Mehmet Oz, is fighting the obesity and mental resilience crisis by activating American students and their families to become health agents of change for their communities. A 501 (C) 3, HealthCorps is helping the country reach the tipping point towards wellness now and for the future of our children.
HealthCorps’ three priorities are:
1) Educating the Student Body: our in-school program empowers and educates youth and faculty about their bodies, their environments and their abilities to affect their world.
Like a Peace Corps for Health, HealthCorps is a national health educational/peer mentoring program up and running in 50 high schools in nine states (AZ, CA, FL, MS, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX). This year the program will impact 25,000 students and 50,000 community members. By 2013, HealthCorps expects to have a presence in all 50 states.
The heart of the program: HealthCorps Coordinators are recent college graduates who defer entry into medical school or graduate health programs to participate in public service through a two-year full time assignment at a designated public high school where they conduct approximately ten classes a week and lead after school and community programs.
“Coordinators” empower teens in underserved populations to make simple lifestyle changes to enhance their well-being and resilience and take the message to friends, families and neighbors. Coordinators’ efforts are guided by the School Health Index (SHI), a key tool developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and compiled by a School Wellness Task Force comprised of students, faculty and community members.
Our school program includes:
- An experiential curriculum (Nutrition, Fitness and Mental Resilience) developed with leading integrative medicine experts and delivered through in-school seminars and after school clubs;
- “Healthy Steps” pedometer contests for students and teachers;
- Tools to create educated consumers, including food label, portion and ingredient deciphering;
- Tools to build mental resilience and hope, manage stress and problem solve;
- Promoting everyday exercise like walking, yoga and simple strength-building routines;
- Service learning projects to transfer HealthCorps lessons to other students;
- Field trips to organic farms and hospitals to promote Real World Relevance;
- “Teen Iron Chef” nutritional cooking lessons and competitions;
- “Biggest Loser” faculty and school staff competitions;
- Parent’s Nights/Teacher Events
- School-wide health fairs to show students the resources within their reach;
