What IS a Watson, anyway?

The Fellowships and Awards Committee and the Watson Foundation welcome Reed graduate and Watson
Fellow Steven Raichlen '75 to talk to students about how a degree inFrench literature and a fellowship
from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation led him to become one of the world's foremost authorities on
barbecuing and grilling.
The theme of Raichlen's Watson was "Medieval Cooking in Europe," and he used his year abroad to study
the intersection of food, history, and culture. "The Watson shaped the course of my career and my
intellectual life," says Raichlen. "It was simply the most life-changing experience I've ever had."
Raichlen will discuss his improbable transition from French scholar to grill master and will answer
questions about the remarkable Watson Foundation Fellowship that made it all possible.
Raichlen has appeared on the Primal Grill and Barbecue University TV shows on PBS. His best-selling
books include Planet Barbecue and How to Grill. He's lectured at the Smithsonian Institution and
Library of Congress; he's written for The New York Times and Esquire, he's been a guest on The Today
Show, Good Morning America, CNN, and Oprah and Howard Stern.
Following his talk, Raichlen will meet with Reed students in small group sessions where they can get
his reactions and advice to their ideas for possible Watson projects of their own. Students must sign
up for a session by sending email to jcannon@reed.edu.
The singular criterion for applying for a Watson Fellowship is that you are a graduating senior from one
of 40 participating institutions; December 2011 graduates must meet the same deadline as May 2012
graduates. The deadline for applications is noon on Thursday, September 15, 2011.
