McGill Lawrence and Davis Internship Expo

McGill Lawrence and Davis Internship Expo
5 - 6:30 P.M., Monday, November 2, 2009
Vollum Lounge

Every summer, a small group of Reedies engage in a host of extraordinary experiences that take them far across the globe. Last summer, they went from Ghana to Rwanda, Portland to Nepal, to India. These are the people who win summer McGill Lawrence and Davis Projects for Peace awards. Here is your opportunity to learn about the work of the 2009 recipients, and to learn how you could create your own summer experience in 2010.

If doing meaningful work this summer holds appeal, consider applying for either the Davis or the McGill Lawrence. The McGill Lawrence Internship Award is a $3,500 award designed to offer Reed students the opportunity to complement their academic studies with a summer internship in the public or non-profit sectors. This fund was originally made available by a donation to help cultivate an environment of understanding and respect for multi-cultural issues at Reed. Eight McGill Lawrence awards are made each year.

In its fourth year, Davis Projects for Peace is an invitation for undergraduate students (including current seniors) to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2010. The projects judged to be the most promising and do-able will be funded at $10,000 each. The objective is to encourage and support today’s motivated youth to create and tryout their own ideas for building peace.

At this presentation, you can learn about the service projects of eight Reedies who were sponsored by the McGill Lawrence Internship Award in summer of 2009, and hear from the winners of the Davis Projects for Peace. Light refreshments will be served, and recipients will be available to answer questions.  While applications aren't due until the spring, the most successful proposals come from students who researched their options ahead of time.
