Portfolio 21 Session

Portfolio 21 Session
Tuesday, April 9, 12 to 1 p.m., Psy 105

Many people outside of this community tend to think "Gosh, all these divestment ideas sound great, but how does one make a buck without oil"? Portfolio 21 has spent the last 31 years working on just that idea. Portfolio 21 is a Portland based global investment firm that works on more than just the profit motive and examines larger social and environmental impacts on its investment choices. We are lucky enough to have its president, John Streur willing to join us to speak about their business and investing practices, as well as a Q & A on related subjects. If you ever wondered how a investment company can be both ethical and growth oriented, this is your chance to ask questions.
Here is what our guest, John Streur, President of portfolio 21, says about his intention for this event, as well as a link to relevant material:

I plan to provide a definition of various forms of sustainable investing, briefly discuss each form and then describe how Portfolio 21 implements our approach to sustainable investing through our global equity strategy.

My expectation is that attendees will have questions and comments throughout the meeting that will guide our discussion towards matters of greatest interest to the attendees.

As background, please find attached a link to a report on the global market for sustainable investing. While I find the definitions used by the authors to be overly inclusive in terms of what they deem to be sustainably managed assets these are nonetheless the terms and definitions being used by the broad investment industry and will be a useful starting point for our discussion. If appropriate please consider providing the link to the report to attendees in advance of our meeting. The report itself is large and most email servers struggle to forward the file.
