A mini workshop with hands on experience at the Virtu OHSU Surgical Simulation, Department of Surgery and a tour of the medical school lead by Dr Conrad Carter '46, Clinical Professor of Neurology at OHSU is open to a maximum of 15 Reedies.
Itinerary prepared by the Program Director of the Virtu OHSU
Surgical Simulation, Department of Surgery. http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/education/simulation-at-ohsu/programs/virtu-ohsu/index.cfm
Starting at 2pm (van will leave Reed at 1:15)
• A talk with Dr. Donn Spight (Program Director of VirtuOHSU/Faculty Dept. of Surgery) He will give an overview about surgery and medicine and discuss what it takes to be successful.
• A brief talk from some surgical residents and possibly some current medical students about their path, pros and cons about going into medicine and particularly on the resident side what life is like as a resident.
• This will be followed by an hour of hands-on surgical lab education time where each student will learn & experience: suturing on a suture board, suturing on a FDA pigs foot, minimally invasive surgical skills development (surgical scope navigation & basic instrument handling), exposure to the daVinci surgical robot (ring transfer using the robot).
During this entire time, as the groups rotate through the stations, the Reed students can ask questions of the instructors make connections and create possible mentoring relationships with the medical students, surgical residents and/or Dr. Spight.
I have created the above event specifically to focus on college level undergraduate student interest. Both Dr. Spight and I look forward to hosting this event for Dr. Carter and the Reed College.
