Dr. Kinari Webb '95: Providing Healthcare, Inspiring Rainforest Conservation

Dr. Kinari Webb (Reed, '95; Yale School of Medicine, '02) has developed a vision that is providing new answers to critical dilemmas in ecosystems where human and natural communities are in conflict, and where basic human health needs go unmet. Working in rural Indonesia, Health In Harmony, Inc. is offering solutions to questions such as "What if you had to choose between food and healthcare for your family? What if illegal logging seemed like the only option for economic security? What if you could afford healthcare without illegal logging?" Since Health In Harmony started its work in July of 2007, more than 5000 individuals have received life-changing healthcare; up to 10% of these patients have paid for their healthcare through conservation-oriented labor; and local villages are actively protecting threatened rainforest habitat as part of a unique incentive program.
