1. Cell & Developmental Biology, OHSU School of Medicine
Industry: Science and Technology
Description
Considering pursuing Biomedical Research?
We will give you the opportunity to try and challenge yourself in cutting-edge basic research. Our goal is to establish a new paradigm for how cells use the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling mechanism to communicate. We established new tools to resolve confusion in the Wnt field about this signaling mechanism. Our findings challenge the standard model and we are at the verge of a break-through allowing us to establish a profoundly different model of Wnt signaling. If there was ever a time to get into a project – this must be it. We expect our analysis to profoundly change the understanding of Wnt signaling and have a major impact on the treatment of cancer and chronic disease caused by Wnt signaling defects.
We use the power of Drosophila molecular genetics to detect and manipulate Wnt signaling, and observe changes for the first time in vivo as they are happening. We combine fly genetics with antibody staining and Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation to detect protein interactions at molecular resolution, and use the high resolution confocal microscope to image preparations.
What will you get out of it? You will see first hand what it takes to work in a lab, see success and failure alike. Be prepared to work hard, get challenged. The task you are given will reflect your increasing skill level and dedication. This is a unique opportunity to see first-hand whether you have the passion for science and the temperament for it. Significant contributions will be recognized by authorship in future publications.
Required from you:
Training or experience demonstrating the a) knowledge of basic laboratory techniques; b) knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, and materials; c) knowledge of basic math; d) ability to follow formulas accurately; e) ability to handle, package, and store laboratory specimens and materials; f) ability to operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment; g) ability to learn routine testing methods, procedures, and techniques; h) ability to keep accurate records in conformance with laboratory procedures; and i) ability to follow written and verbal procedures (instructions).

2. Commerce Kitchen
Industry: Advertising/Marketing
Description
Denver Summer Internship - Creating Link Bait
Commerce Kitchen is hiring a pair of summer interns from Reed! I know, we can barely contain our enthusiasm and neither should you!
What will you be working on?
In short, link bait. At CK we pride ourselves on delivering interesting web solutions to drive traffic, to start conversations and to build communities for our diverse base of internet marketing clients.
Infographics? Check. Instructographics? Check. Helpful calculators? Check. Fun, interactive maps? Double check.
Depending on your expertise, you'll be helping us create any and all of these (and doing the research to justify what we should create, where we should post it and how we should promote it) for up to 8 clients. You will own these projects beginning to end, but will have access to and can get input from our crack team of internet marketing superheroes and web devs as you need it. We're here to guide your path, but you'll be blazing your own trail.
And even though you'll have specific tasks to focus on each week, you'll also have the chance to interact with folks and learn some about building search optimized sites, UX and usability, and social media marketing. Awesome! Right?
So what does this mean to you?
Well, if you're a graphic designer, a top-notch researcher interested in marketing, or a budding web developer then we want to see your work and hear what you are passionate about.
And we all work better with a partner in crime, so find your Reed bestie that can act as your other half and apply together. At CK, we balance each other out and think we deliver higher caliber work when we have a partner to challenge us. The whole left-brain, right-brain, and checks and balances thing.
We're specifically looking for a pair that can work independently and handle the research and creative development necessary to make shareable link bait all on their own. So that means we'll be hiring the pair that seems like they can best execute together - probably made up of one designer and one researcher. But we are flexible - so as long as you can explain how you will work together to crank out thought-provoking, visually stunning link bait, we'll consider you. Sell it to us, baby!
Don't have a friend that you'd want to work with this summer? That's okay too - we're still accepting individual applications. But note, you will be paired with another intern on a daily basis.
Details
We want you to join us in the biking, hiking, park lounging, patio sitting, grilling, cruiser riding, beer drinking mecca that is Denver - like seriously. Full-time work for ~10 weeks.
And if that isn't enough, you'll also receive $10/hour and office in our 19th century firehouse, complete with a ping pong table, foosball table, Wii and a regularly scheduled Wine Friday.
Although you are on your own for housing and transportation, we'll help make recommendations based on your lifestyle and budget. Denver has lots of great public transportation options, so note, you don't need a car!
Sign me up! How do I apply?
All you need to do is submit your resume and a cover letter that discusses why you'd like to work with us, what your experience is, what your superhero character would be and two faculty references (email and phone number) who are familiar with your work and skills.
- Graphic designers-do you have experience in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign? Let us know.
- Researchers and marketing folk-give us an example of a project you've spearheaded or insights that you've discovered in the course of marketing a product.
- Web developers-what languages have you started learning and what skills would you like to continue to learn?
