Mating systems and reproductive physiology

The family of cichlid fish are one of the largest vertebrate families with estimates of the number of species varying anywhere from 1300 to 3000. Within these species lies a remarkable variability in mating systems and parental care strategies ranging from monogamous biparental mouthbrooders to polygamous uniparental substrate spawners. As a result of this variability, experiments can be conducted to better understand the evolution of mating systems and reproductive physiology. In my first experiment, I will present phylogenetically controled comparisons of the reproductive physiology of closely related species differing in only in mating syste. Second, I present three studies where three mating systems are explored (cooperative breeding, polygyny and polygamy) to understand their consequences for reproductive physiology.
