SMART: Start Making a Reader Today
SMART’s vision is an Oregon in which every child can read and is empowered to succeed. We strive to inspire a love of reading in Oregon’s children so that they will go on to become lifelong readers and lifelong learners. To transform this vision into reality, SMART engages community volunteers to read one-on-one with Pre-K through 3rd grade children for one hour per week throughout the school year. SMART provides literacy support to students in more than 220 schools statewide (over 70 schools in the Portland Metro area). Volunteer to help children discover the joy of reading. One hour per week is all it takes to make a lifetime of difference in their lives!
Further information and application available on the SMART website. Please also see the Reed-Lane Partnership, Project Eye-to-Eye, Friends of the Children Tutoring @ Reed and Yellow Brick Road: Homeless Youth Outreach.
