Training and Educational Programs 

Below are a few links to programs aimed at helping volunteers educate themselves and better develop their skills in serving others, both at home and abroad.



Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service
The Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service is an internship program intended for students who are involved in volunteer activities and are excited about
exploring professional opportunities in the non-profit sector. Ideal for undergraduate student leaders who are engaged in service programs on and off their campuses. All majors and fields of study are welcome. With a single application, students are enrolled at Georgetown University, live in a furnished apartment on campus in the center of DC, and are placed in a nonprofit internship for eight weeks.

Maryland Institute Master's in Community Arts
The Maryland Institute College of Art has a new Master of Arts in Community Arts program. The curriculum is designed for visual artists who want a career in arts-based youth and community development. It runs for two summers and one academic year, including a 10-month full-time residency with a community-based organization and coursework taught by MICA faculty.

National Teaching Fellowship
The National Teaching Fellowship at Citizen Schools, a program currently supported by AmeriCorps, is a two-year leadership development program offering experience and the opportunity to work within a Citizen Schools campus and a partner organization. The Fellowship is designed to provide hands-on leadership development to recent college graduates and mid-career professionals who have high potential as educators and community builders. It is paid, with full health benefits, and offers the opportunity to work in a collegial and entrepreneurial environment.

The Oregon Bus Project's Politicorps
PolitiCorps is a 10-week political boot camp orchestrated by the diabolical minds at the Bus Project. PolitiCorps is the only program of its kind - a political immersion program that provides future leaders with skills training, policy courses and intensive fieldwork. These courses include campaign management training, public speaking and debate, political messaging and media courses, and more. Fellows spend a significant amount of their time conducting field work with partner programs, directly impacting state and local races by working to increase urban youth voter registration and participating and organizing Bus trips to swing districts to canvass for progressive candidates. The program seeks to educate fellows on the intricacies of state politics, using Oregon as a model. In addition, it is designed to take these lessons and connect them to the national arena.

SOUL Summer School
SOUL Summer School is an eight-week-long intensive introduction to community organizing and revolutionary change, designed for young activists (ages 18-25) who have been involved with social justice organizing for at least one year. Dedicated to helping young women and young people of color step up to lead the movement, it provides a structured opportunity to work full-time to develop grassroots organizing skills and to meet activists from other campuses and communities. They encourage everyone to apply, but have a strong affirmative action program for people of color, women, LGBTQ people, youth & working class people. The program includes organizing internships, political education, and organizing skills training.

Council for International Educational Exchange
CIEE is active in the development and administration of study, work, travel, and volunteer programs worldwide.

Institute for Central American Development Studies
ICADS was created to fill the information gap in foreign policy between North American citizens and their governments. ICADS is a center for study, research, and analysis of Central American social and environmental issues. Students can participate in Spanish language immersion courses, semester research programs, and field courses in resource management and sustainable development in Nicaragua, Belize, and Costa Rica.

The International Partnership for Service Learning
By studying at a local university and serving 15-20 hours per week in a school, orphanage, health clinic or other agency addressing human needs, IPS-L students find their knowledge of the host culture– and of themselves– take on greater depth and meaning.

Learning Abroad Center
Has a database of over 1,500 opportunities (maintained by the University of Minnesota).

Lisle Intercultural Programs
"Lisle Intercultural Programs offer 2 to 6 week programs with a unique, four-part approach to global learning. Emphasizing intellectual exploration, cultural immersion, group and personal reflection, and group community building, they are developed around important themes growing out of the experience of peoples worldwide. Most programs offer homestays and opportunities for hands-on service projects."

Mobility International USA
The mission of MIUSA is to empower people with disabilities around the world through international exchange, information, and technical assistance and training, and to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in international exchange and development programs.

Reed College International Programs 
Offical domestic and international off-campus study programs and information about preparing to live, study, or travel abroad.

School for International Training
SIT offers master's degrees, study abroad, extension courses, educational system reform initiatives, management development, and peace and conflict resolution training. SIT's participants develop the leadership capabilities and cross-cultural competencies required to advance international understanding, work effectively in multicultural environments, and achieve sustainable development at the community level and on a national or global scale.

Southern Cone Internships
Southern Cone Internships gives students the opportunity for professional work experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina or Santiago, Chile. All internships are unpaid positions, but accepted students receive such benefits as college credits, professional work experience in the international work world, and improved language skills.

Taj Global Understanding
Taj Global Understanding offers volunteer and exhange programs between the United States and India to promote mutual cultural understanding. There are service programs in the areas of education, health, environment, and the creative arts.
