Discover Reed:
From Doyle to Laurels
Friday, September 30 or Monday, November 7
When William T. Foster, the College's first president, arrived in Portland in 1910, he had one goal for Reed: that it be "an honest, sustained, and adequate challenge to the best powers of the best American youth." Little has changed since then. Reed remains a place of passion—a place where students come to indulge in the experience of learning for the sake of learning. Some find excitement in Mathematica marathons in Polytopia (translation: math programming marathons in the Math lounge). Others contemplate the appropriate ratio of lipids to gluten while striving towards a better concoction in the Ladies Pie Society. Still others debate whether fencing or rugby constitutes the Platonic form of athletic competition. Reedies find creative ways to weave together their academic and recreational passions.
With the history of Reed in mind, we invite prospective students ("prospies") and their families to attend Discover Reed. This event shares the Reed experience through campus tours, an optional overnight stay, a peek at the blue glow of the nuclear reactor, or perhaps a jaunt through the Reed canyon. Additionally, students and parents can attend open houses with admission staff and faculty, enjoy lunch with current students, or ask questions at panels on academics, student life, and financial aid.
Discover Reed, our fall open house, offers prospective students the opportunity to experience the big ideas and little details that make Reed what it is. Our campus is brimming with students eager to discuss what they value about Reed. Take a few moments to test the coffee in our on-campus coffee shops (the Paradox and Paradox Lost) or just enjoy Portland in autumn while watching Frisbee on the front lawn. Ask who Doyle was, and why he has a 300-pound concrete owl named after him. Investigate, inquire, and explore!
When registering for this event, consider first whether you would like an overnight stay. Students are welcome to stay on campus with fellow prospies for one night—before the event or afterwards. These students will be matched with a group of prospies and a Reedie host.
High school seniors will have the option to interview while on campus. These interviews will be scheduled before the student's arrival.
Once students arrive, they will receive an information packet that includes their scheduled interview time (where applicable), overnight dorm host ticket, and meal tickets for eating on campus. All students will receive a pass to lunch on Discover Reed. Students who stay overnight will receive meal tickets for breakfast and dinner in the campus dining hall.
Online registration is available here. Space is limited. Reservations, overnights, and interviews are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Class visits will not be available during this event. Fear not if you choose to arrive a bit earlier, there will be plenty to do on Sunday as well. Early check-in for Sunday begins at 1pm.
