Student Internships
McGill-Lawrence Internship
The McGill-Lawrence Internship is designed to offer Reed students the opportunity to complement their academic studies with a summer internship in the public or non-profit sectors. This fund was originally made available by a donation to help cultivate an environment of understanding and respect for multicultural issues at Reed.
Angel Prado worked with The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU). He reached out to high school students in the local community to impart upon them the importance of a college education. He also assisted TELACU in establishing an alumni program for its scholarship program, so that the organization could contact those it has aided in order to increase its resources and ability to assist current students in need of assistance. Prado, in working with the organization, sought to understand what he sees as "the disproportionate implementation of education in Los Angeles."
Ashley Hinmon worked with the National Conference for Community and Justice to develop and run a residential summer camp that brought together student leaders from diverse backgrounds to gain tools in conflict resolution.
Maralena Murphy interned in a public hospital in Quito, Ecuador, to learn about health issues facing rural populations. She worked with the aid agency Ayuda Directa to establish a health center in Monte Nuevo, a rural village eight hours outside of Quito. She ran workshops and trained community leaders to run the health center in a self-sustainable fashion.
Mc-Gill Lawrence with an Economics/Law Emphasis
Kim Thien Nguyen served as a legal intern through the Immigration legal Services Branch of the Catholic Charities Organization. As a legal intern Kim assisted with general case loads; explaining verdicts or requests to clients; interpreting and translating docusments from and to Vietnamese; coordinating pro-bono Violence Against Women Act trainings; researching cases; writing reports; and establishing and managing a new database for current and former clients.
Ducey Public Policy internships
These internships provide a full-time summer stipend to work in any organization engaged in public policy.
Greg Toshio Meronek (political science) worked at Amnesty International in Los Angeles.
Reed Environmental Activism Fund (REAF)
Reed Environmental Activism Fund (REAF) recognizes Reed students with longstanding commitments to environmental activism and allows them an opportunity to participate in an internship related to their activism.
Michael McGreevy worked with the Ecotrust Copper River Program to research policy and native perspectives in bringing together government agencies, private landholders, tribes, and tribal corporations to ensure a sustainable future for the watershed and its inhabitants.
