The second annual Wallace T. MacCaffrey Distinguished Lecture in History will be presented by Harold J. Cook, John F. Nickoll Professor of History at Brown University and prize-winning author of works in the history of science and medicine. Cook’s book Matters of Exchange: Commerce, Medicine, and Science in the Dutch Golden Age (Yale University Press, 2007) was awarded the Pfizer Prize in 2009 by the History of Science Society. His previous book, Trials of an Ordinary Doctor: Johannes Groenevelt in Seventeenth-Century London (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1994), received the Welch Medal from the American Association of the History of Medicine. Prior to joining the Brown University faculty, Cook served as director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine in University College London, where he was also professor of the history of medicine. He has also taught at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Harvard University, and the University of Oklahoma. The MacCaffrey Lecture in Reed’s history department was established in 2012 in recognition of the distinguished contributions to the discipline of history made by Wallace T. MacCaffrey, Francis Lee Higginson Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, and of his generosity to Reed College, from which he graduated in 1942.
