Pompeii and the Roman Villa at LACMA
Whether or not you are feeling:
“…like the insistent out-of-tune
Of a broken violin on an August afternoon,”*
* T. S. Eliot: Portrait of a Lady
come join your fellow Reedies to view the Pompeii and the
Roman Villa exhibit
at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
It may even bring back some memories of Hum 110! We have arranged for reduced-rate
group tickets (“Reedies” include
alumni, families, guests, and returning or entering students). Read a review
of this exhibit in the LA Times.
The date: Sunday, August 16, 2009
The place: LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, 90036
The program:
11 a.m.: Museum opens. Pick up your tickets.
11:15 a.m.: Bring-your-own brown-bag lunch to the outdoor tables on the “LA
Times Central Court,” also known as “plaza level.” Look for
Reed shirts, hats, and the small stuffed griffin. Come early; the tables may
fill up quickly.
2 p.m.: Enter the exhibit in the Art of the Americas building.
After you leave the Pompeii and the Roman Villa exhibit, spend as much of the
afternoon as you wish viewing other LACMA exhibits until the museum closes at
8 p.m. Free classical concerts at 6 p.m. on Sunday evenings in the Bing Theater
are common. (If you would like to bring children whom you think may not enjoy
the “Pompeii” exhibit,
we suggest that you explore LACMA’s “Family Sunday” program
ahead of time and decide whether it meets your needs.)
Tickets and reservations:
LACMA members: Order your free tickets through the museum for 2 p.m.
Sunday, August 16 in the usual way (877/522-6225). When you have done so, please
let us know by email (BobPatHadley@aol.com)
or phone
(310/391-1427). If you have already used your free tickets and want to see
the “Pompeii” exhibit
again, follow the “non-members” procedure described below.
Non-members: We have arranged a special rate of $16 per person for our group.
Availability is limited, so please respond early. To reserve your space, please
mail your check for $16 per adult (children age 17 & under free) so it arrives
by July 1, 2009. We need to inform the museum of our group size.
Make checks payable to Robert Hadley. Mail to 11408 Diller Ave., Culver City,
CA 90230. Please include your name, phone number, email address, and postal address.
Late reservations will be accommodated as space allows.
When you arrive:
Look for Reedies at a brown-bag lunch table and sign in. Be
sure to pick up your tickets BEFORE the group enters the exhibit.
Parking:
Pay parking options include (a) underground garage entered from the
south side of 6th Street a short distance east of Fairfax Ave., (b) lot at Wilshire
Blvd. & Spaulding Ave., (c) lot at the Petersen Museum on the south side
of Wilshire, and (d) meters on 6th Street if you find an empty space.

Ongoing
Thirsty Third Thursday is looking for a host. If you would like to help organize this event in the area, please contact the Southern California chapter steering committee at alumni-so-cal-steering@lists.reed.edu. It is easy and painless to lead this event. (And in this case "host" simply means showing up first, the consumables are no-host.)
Thirsty Third Thursday
Share conversation and comestibles with fellow Reedies on Thirsty Third Thursday. Look for the pink table-top sign and the stuffed griffin at a pub/bar/restaurant near you. Please note, there is no Thirsty Third in June, but lots of other things are going on.
If you're curious about where other Thirsty Third Thursday events are happening, check here.
Book group
The book group meets monthly, usually on the second Sunday. All alumni
are welcome to read the book, and join the discussion. For
further information or to rsvp, call or email
Robert Hadley '53 at 310/391-1427.
July: Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary
August: David Foster Wallace, Consider the Lobster and Other Essays
Listserve
The Southern California chapter has recently set up an email listserve to arrange get-togethers with fellow Reedies on short notice.
If you want to invite Reedies to join you for a concert,
movie, drink, dinner or a hike, please send an email to the list. This is an opt-in list, which means the only people who will see the
announcements will be people who have subscribed to the web page.
There is an option to get the messages
combined in one message daily or weekly; please subscribe at https://www.lists.reed.edu/mailman/listinfo/alumni-so-cal-network
If you have an idea for an event please contact the chapter. We'd love to hear your ideas.
Steering Committee
To contact the chapter, send email to alumni-so-cal-steering@lists.reed.edu or you can look up individual members using the alumni directory in IRIS.
