How do I become a tutor?

To become a tutor:

  • You must be recommended by a faculty member to tutor a specific course or subject. If you are interested in tutoring for a particular course, we encourage you to discuss it with a faculty member who is familiar with your work in that subject area. This is often, but not necessarily, the instructor you had for the course.
  • You must have a cumulative Reed GPA of 3.0.
  • You must attend a New Tutor Orientation session. The orientation covers the logistics of working as a tutor and good tutoring practices. You will receive invitations to attend these orientation sessions once we receive a faculty recommendation and confirm that your GPA meets the requirement. You will be paid for these sessions.

What should I do to get started?

Once you've completed your general orientation session, you'll be hired as an Individual Tutor in our system. In order to get started, you'll need to fill out your tutoring profile in IRIS. Follow these steps to get set up:

  1. Visit iris.reed.edu/tutor and click on "Edit your tutoring info" in the sidebar to the left.
  2. Schedule your availability.  Add blocks of time in which you're happy to receive booking requests. You can add multiple blocks for each day.
  3. Check your "available" checkboxes, which you'll see in the sections for each subject you're a tutor for. Make sure they are checked for subjects you wish to tutor.
  4. Click "Update Booking and Availability" to save your schedule and the courses you are available for.
  5. Fill out a brief introduction for each subject. Consider including:
    • Your major
    • The professor you had for the course you’re tutoring
    • What you like about the course
    • A nice, friendly note to encourage students to book you

If you have any questions about setting up your profile, please contact David.

How do students find me?

Students book tutors through the IRIS Tutor Booking App. For instructions on how to use the app, please visit the Booking App Instruction Page.

Students find tutors through many channels. Faculty may suggest a tutor for a particular subject to their class or to individual students. Students may also visit the DoJo, or this website, and follow links to access the list of individual tutors. In addition, drop-in tutors may suggest that students book a one-on-one session with a tutor for more help. Many tutors are booked based on word-of-mouth recommendations, too.

When a student decides to book a tutor, they will visit the IRIS Tutor app, where they'll have the option to "Book a Tutor". However, if they don't recognize any of the tutor names listed, students may also email all tutors listed for a particular subject. In that case, please 'reply all' and let both the student and other tutors know whether you're able to accept the request or not. Then, you'll need to direct the student to the booking app to schedule a one-on-one session with you.

How do I get paid?

In order to get paid for your tutoring hours, you need to log your shift on Reed's online payroll system, available at bannerweb.reed.edu. There is no need to use the Comments field on this page. Resources to help with Banner payroll are available at www.reed.edu/gps/gps_student.html.

You'll also need to make sure we know what hours you have worked. If all your one-on-one tutoring sessions were booked through the IRIS tutor booking app, you don't need to log any additional information. However, if a student arranges a meeting in person or via email, you'll need to log a session.

If the hours in the booking app don't match your reported hours in Banner, you'll receive an email asking you to reconcile them.

Please refer to the chart, below, on what steps need to be completed for each student position.

How do I use the Booking App?

Please visit the Booking App Instruction Page.

I'm a Drop-In Tutor - how can I get someone to cover my shift?

If you know another Drop-In tutor for the subject you work in, you can ask them in person. Otherwise, please use the Tutor Moodle and start a new topic to find a substitute. Out of courtesy, please use the subject-specific moodles.

What about feedback?

The Tutor Feedback Form provides a way for tutees to submit feedback about a particular tutor.  If you'd like to receive more feedback, consider sharing that page with your tutees.

If you'd like to leave feedback on any topic, please contact David - we'd love to hear from you!
